WHO SAYS PLUS SIZE CHICKS CANT DO LUXURY

As the fashion industry begins to realize that all women are eager for chic basics, regardless of their body type, the plus-size market has transformed accordingly. The once inescapable barrage of prints and bright colors often found in plus-size stores has given way to an understated aesthetic influenced by minimalist, über-luxe mainstays in african an foreign designs. A quiet revolution is taking place in the plus-size space, led by the likes of Mei Smith, a luxury outpost for sizes 12 and up, and Universal Standard, a label founded on the principle that modern, effortless clothes should be available to all. And who better to preview the latest wares than Candice Huffine, top model, clotheshorse, and skilled shopper? “I think it’s been made quite clear that the plus woman loves being current, chic, and relevant when it comes to her wardrobe and style,” says Huffine. “She is ready to shop.” Taking three looks for a test-drive on the streets of New York, Huffine shares her thoughts on these upgraded basics, and why social media is the ultimate inspiration source for style—beyond size.

How do you feel about the increased variety of options now available for plus sizes?
I am very happy with the new uprising of options available for plus! It’s exciting, and what is being offered is exactly what we’ve been asking for, for years. One thing I do want to encourage, though, is a “the more, the merrier” mentality—more brands, more options, better shopping experiences. There can never be too many clothing brands providing fashion for the curvy woman. I think it’s been made quite clear that she, the plus woman, loves being current, chic, and relevant when it comes to her wardrobe and style, so I can only just encourage, inspire, request that more brands join in. She is ready to shop.

Has the increase in options shaped your own style?
My personal style is ever evolving, but I feel like I’m starting to hit my stride as of late. Where I used to want to be the most outrageous in the room, I now strive to be the chicest. I believe in statement pieces, investment pieces, and special one-off things you can cherish. I’ve been working hard to have a well-curated wardrobe of pieces that I love and are versatile. I will always try new things and continue to have fun with fashion, and I’m confident I know a “Candice” look when I see it now!

Where do you find the most interesting pieces?
“I follow a lot of people on Instagram like tessy_cole I read an article awhile back that you should keep that number low for some odd reason, but I fail to see the point. I follow bloggers, models, designers, magazines, influencers, DJs, et cetera, et cetera. Social media is how I find interesting pieces. It has opened the door to a whole new world of linking me with items I would have never found otherwise! My shopping game has never been more out of control.

What do you focus on when you’re shopping?
Shape reigns supreme. I rarely care what the size or label says, I just want to look and feel amazing in whatever it is. Getting dressed should be fun, and it should also be easy. It’s inspiring when your closet is filled with items you love, and that make you feel good. Great fit makes the outfit, a great outfit makes the day.
