Oxford University's chancellor says he will not "rewrite history" in response to a student-led campagin to remove a statue of 19th century colonialist Cecil Rhodes from one of the university's colleges.
The movement, inspired by protests at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, which led to its statue of Rhodes being removed last April, the "Rhodes Must Fall Oxford" campaign says the statue housed at Oriel College celebrates a "brutal racist."
The dispute is one of many university controversies about issues related to history and identity. In the U.S., college campuses saw many protests about the relevance of the Confederate flag on their educational grounds. Yale University students were among several campuses that called Halloween costumes into question that offended minorities.
The decision to remove the Rhodes statue will be made byby Oriel, one of 38 colleges that make up the university. Officials say steps will be taken to improve the representation and experience of students from minority backgrounds at the institution. It will launch a six-month consultation on whether to pull down the statue.

In the United States, southern campuses have been rocked by arguments over the confederate flag, while at Yale a row erupted when an academic pushed back against suggestions that students should self-censor Halloween costumes to avoid causing offense.
Chris Patten, Oxford's chancellor, spoke against removing the Rhodes statue in a speech widely reported on Wednesday.
"Our history is not a blank page on which we can write our own version of what it should have been, according to our contemporary views and prejudices," he said.
A fervent imperialist and mining magnate, Rhodes was a central figure in Britain's colonial project in southern Africa, giving his name to Rhodesia, present-day Zimbabwe, and founding the De Beers diamond empire.
A student at Oriel in his youth, Rhodes left the college money when he died, which helped fund the construction of the building where his statue stands in a niche on the facade.
The student campaigners see it as a "veneration" of a man who made his fortune from the exploitation of African miners, secured power through bloody imperial wars, and paved the way to apartheid with his beliefs and measures on racial segregation.
"(Rhodes Must Fall in Oxford) is NOT an attempt to 'rewrite history', but its opposite - a campaign to bring its uncomfortable truths to salience," said Jack Kellam, a political theory student atOxford, on Twitter after Patten's speech.
The campaigners have also argued that the statue is a symbol of racist attitudes that black and ethnic minority students still encounter at Oxford today, and that removing it would demonstrate a commitment by the university to combat racism.
RHODES SCHOLARS
The decision will be made by Oriel, one of 38 colleges that make up the university. It has announced steps to improve the representation and experience of students from minority backgrounds at the college, and will launch a six-month consultation on whether to pull down the statue.
Patten, whose role as chancellor is largely ceremonial, told BBC Radio 4 on Wednesday thatOxford should welcome debate on historical issues, no matter how uncomfortable, but that taking aim at physical monuments was the wrong way to go.
"Our cities are full of buildings that were built with the proceeds of activities, the slave trade and so on, which would nowadays be regarded as completely unacceptable," he said.
He asked rhetorically what should be done about Trinity College in Cambridge, which was founded by King Henry VIII, who had two of his six wives executed.
Patten, a former Conservative politician and governor of Hong Kong, also said that Rhodes' views on race and empire were "common to his time" and probably not very different from those of Britain's World War Two hero Winston Churchill.
GALLO IMAGES VIA GETTY IMAGESStudents celebrate as the Cecil John Rhodes statue is removed at the University of Cape Town on April 9, 2015 in CapeTown, South Africa. After nearly a month of protesting, sit-ins and relentless meetings by students, the statue of British colonialist will finally be removed.
Rhodes endowed the famous scholarships that bear his name and that have allowed 8,000 students from countries around the world to study at Oxford over the past century. Patten said some Rhodes scholars had become campaigners against apartheid and for civil liberties.
The long list of prominent Rhodes scholars also includes Bill Clinton and former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who waded into the Oxford dispute in an email to British newspaper The Independent in December.
"The students of Oriel should be clear-eyed about Rhodes' faults and failings but proud of his achievements," he wrote, lamenting Rhodes' ideas about race but referring to "the genius that led to the creation of the Rhodes scholarships."
The student campaigners responded that invoking the scholarships was "a justification for the continued whitewashing of Rhodes' violent, destructive legacy." (Editing by Stephen Addison)
Our skin is the largest live organ on our bodies. You will be surprised how many of us that do not care about it. What we find is a lot of people tend to concentrate on the face leaving their bodies neglected. Our skin is with us throughout our entire lives- therefore it is imperative that we do learn about it and look after it through the decades.
The earlier we start to look after our skin the better for us in the long run. It is like a bank account; the earlier we start to invest, the better it will look over the decades.
Skin care at 20 At 20 years old usually our skin glows and shines almost like it is showing off. You can’t imagine your skin letting you down. Yet, there are a few pimple that show up every now and then. It is advisable to use mild skin care such as mild cleanser that have anti pimple.
Skin care at 30 At 30 years old, your skin will go through certain changes; such as, some part becoming oily, while some part might be dry. Dermatologist often advise to use the noncomedogenic skin care and choose cream or lotion with anti-oxidant such as those which contain Vitamin C. Believe it or not this is the age group (other than in your teens) that our skin can go nuts. I would recommend you not to panic but seek advice from an expert immediately. Oil production will decrease at this stage, so, wrinkles and lines may appear, especially around lips and eyes. Therefore, choose the best skin care products you can afford for your skin type. But before choosing skin care products, consult a beauty therapist to check your skin condition. Make sure the products selected for your skin are the right ones. At this stage in your life you do not want to use products that will cause your skin to react.
Skin at 50 years old and over At 50 years old and above, your skin will look completely different to when you where in your 20’s unless you are very lucky. They say this is the stage to really start drinking lots of water. Up to 8 glasses per day. If there are many changes, you should see a consultant immediately. If you do not maintain your skin at this stage you may loose the tightness for ever. You will notice more lines, wrinkles and shadows in your 50’s. Don’t ignore them, treat them; get advice to reduce them.
Take care of yourself by resting, exercising and eating good food. Also, reduce stress and anger so your skin will stay glowing, naturally.Yes, life throws challenges at all of us. But, if we are not careful we will wear all those challenges on our faces and bodies.

An estimated 600 million people use the Internet worldwide; the Internet revolution has transformed the way the world communicates and does business.
Most of us have embraced, with open arms, this feature called the internet. In fact, you are reading this post using the Internet. The internet has evolved to cover various aspects and one remarkable aspect that the Internet covers is social networking – a dedicated website or other application that allows users to communicate with each other by creating, sharing or exchanging information, career, interests, ideas pictures/videos, in virtual communities and networks.
Persons of all ages make use of Social Networks, but research has shown that a higher percentage of teenagers make use of it. Although the Internet has proved so useful since its invention, it also has its dangers. In the wake of this, the EU recently amended its data protection rules to raise the ‘age of digital consent’ of Social Network users who are teenagers from 13 to 16. Any child below 16 who wishes to use social networks would need the express permission of his/her parents. I think it is a good rule and Nigerians should borrow a leaf from this and push for this bill.
Should teenagers be left to use Social Network unsupervised? One of the benefits of social network especially to kids is that it helps people stay in touch with friends and family and meet and interact with like-minded people. How then are social networks dangerous?
Children do not understand the need for privacy, neither do some adults. When one creates a social network account he puts up personal details which is accessible to all. Social network platforms have chat rooms where kids can meet and interact with other people who they think are their age mates. In reality, if you could increase your age to sign up for a social network platform or enter a chat room, how are you sure that there are no adults in such rooms who reduced their age to pose as teenagers?
The fact remains that an online friend who you do not know personally in real life is a stranger. Kids do not possess the perceptive powers to distinguish who is really trying to be just friendly and who has an ulterior motive. Even an adult can be deceived.
In 2012, a young lady named Cynthia was killed in Lagos by friends who she met online. She was 24 years old, way past her teen years. Also, another Facebook post that went viral showed the need to be careful of our online friends:
“A guy sends you a friend request, you don’t know him, but he’s got a cute profile pic, so you accept. It’s baby girl’s first day of school, she looks so sweet in her new outfit you just have to take a picture and put it on Facebook so all your friends and family can see. You’re so excited dropping her off that you check into her school on Facebook saying, I can’t believe how big she’s gotten, time sure flies. One proud mum/dad right here.
“Meanwhile, the mystery guy whose friend request you hurriedly accepted this morning is saving that picture you posted of your daughter in her cute new outfit to his phone and texting it to 60 other grown men across the world with the caption “Caucasian female, age 5, brown hair, green eyes $2,500”. Not only did you provide a picture of your little girl to a child trafficker, but you also handed him the name and exact location of her school on a silver cyber platter.
You go to pick her up at three this afternoon, but she is nowhere to be found, little do you know that your precious baby girl was sold to a 43-year-old paedophile before you even stepped out of her school this morning and now she is on her way to a strange country with a bag over her head, confused, terrified and crying, because a man she has never seen before picked her up from school and now she doesn’t know where her parents are, where she’s going or what is going to happen to her.”
In the light of this, it is necessary for parents to monitor their kids’ use of social network. How can they achieve this? A father in Kentucky, Kevin Jones forced his daughter to wear a shirt that read “I am 10 years old” boldly written in front and “5th Grader” behind, because she lied about her age, created a social network account and started dating.
Well, what works for this family might not necessarily work for another family. Seizing your kids devices or not buying them one at all would not stop them from creating accounts. Making up stories to scare them away from using social media is also not a good idea. Kids are more internet savvy than most parents, so they could quickly find out the credibility of your story, thus making it difficult for them to believe anything you say in the future. It is best to alert them to the dangers of social networks, periodically monitor their use of social network, and trust that they’ll take your advice having played your role as a parent.
As we enjoy the internet and all of its beautiful and exciting facets, let us be wary of the inherent danger especially to our kids. We should be social network smart!
At some minutes after 2am on Sunday (today) the collation exercise of the rerun governorship election in Bayelsa State was abruptly adjourned to reconvene at 11am. This was after the results of the poll in four of the local governments were announced. The Independent National Electoral Commission Returning Officer, Mr. Zana Akpagu, adjourned the exercise which was taking place at the Yenagoa Local Government Area Headquarters. In the declared results, the All Progressives Congress scored 448 votes in Yenagoa LGA while the Peoples Democratic Party polled 839. In Brass LGA, APC had 1,679 and the PDP got 5. In Sagbama LGA, APC scored 119 , PDP, 180 while APC had 139 in Ogbia LGA with PDP polling 1,290 votes. During the announcement, there was mild drama when the PDP agent at Brass LGA, Fred Agbedi, protested against the result calling for its cancellation. The APC agent, Dennis Otitio, who was evidently agitated stood up and started talking to the audience without permission from Akpagu. Akpagu was displeased with the APC agent and threatened to send him out of the hall. As of 9.45pm on Saturday, it was noticed that results were being brought by returning officers to the state headquarters of the commission. Meanwhile, no fewer than 12 persons suspected to be militants and security agents were feared killed during the rescheduled election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area and other polling units across the state. It was learnt that the 12 included four policemen, two soldiers and six civilians alleged to be militants from the neighbouring Delta State. It was further learnt that the deaths stemmed from shootings in some LGAs in the state, including Nembe and Ekeremor. Shootings were said to have started in some parts of the state in the early morning of Saturday, the day of the rerun. A resident of Ekeremor, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said some militants attacked Ekeremor, the hometown of the Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, twice. The source said the first attack, which was carried out by some militants suspected to be from Delta State was around 1am, while the second attack took place around 3am. Investigations showed that the attacks, which were aimed at making it impossible for election to be held in the polling units with 13,000 voters’, were repelled by security agents. Also, as a result of sporadic shootings in Southern Ijaw, two persons were said to have received gunshot wounds in Agoibiri area. An unconfirmed number of casualties was recorded after the shootings. The corpses of the dead bodies, numbering seven, were said to have been deposited in Oboro community in Bomadi area of Delta State. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Asinim Butswat, said he had yet to be briefed on the incidents. He, however, promised to confirm the incident, saying he only heard that some hoodlums snatched electoral materials in Ogbia and that the police had intensified efforts to recover them. As of the time of going to press, the spokesman had yet to respond to the death claims as well as the effort by the police on the snatched materials. Some members of Governor Seriake Dickson’s campaign team, the Restoration Campaign Organisation, confirmed that there were shootings and killings in Ekeremor on Saturda. They claimed that because of the development, election could not be held in nine units in Ekeremor. They further claimed that in the Amassoma area of Southern Ijaw, elections were only held in some units, while others could not get election materials because of widespread violence. In Brass, they claimed that election materials did not get to some units, including Akassa area. The Dickson loyalists also alleged that there were heavy shootings and attacks of the Peoples Democratic Party members in Bassambiri area of Nembe. According to them, a prominent ex-militant leader and his supporters also hijacked election materials in Peremabiri. They also alleged that in Ward 4 of Southern Ijaw, election materials for units 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29 were hijacked by political thugs. The campaign spokesman for Dickson, Mr. Jonathan Obuebite, alleged that from what transpired during the supplementary election, the security agencies had failed the people of Bayelsa. He said widespread violence occurred across the LGAs that participated in the exercise despite the assurances from President Muhammadu Buhari that security agencies would live up to the expectations of the people. He said with what happened in the rescheduled poll, Dickson had been vindicated that the security agencies were not ready to provide the enabling environment for all the political parties to operate. Speaking on the supplementary poll, the campaign team of the APC candidate, Mr. Timipre Sylva, dismissed the claim that the Presidency had any hand in the poll. The spokesman, Sylva-Igiri Campaign Organisation, Mr. Nathan Egba, said, “Our attention has been drawn to a sponsored media report that the Presidency has issued a directive to the Independent National Electoral Commission to declare Sylva winner of the election. “The Sylva-Igiri Campaign Organisation wishes to sound it clear once again that President Muhammadu Buhari is not influencing the result of the election in favour of our candidate, having remained neutral from the beginning of the process. “The report linking the Presidency to the Bayelsa election was misplaced and mischievous. The APC was shocked at such claims coming from the PDP at a time election was ongoing in the various polling units in the entire Southern Ijaw LGA and some units in six other local government areas of the state.” Egba said the statement from the opposition giving victory to the APC in the poll is an admittance of imminent defeat on their part as they must have sensed from the reports coming from the field. He advised Dickson to learn from the experience of the last presidential election and stop his “brand of propaganda that had not taken him far since the election process began months back.” The PDP, however, praised the people of Southern Ijaw and others in the remaining 101 units where the rerun took place for their steadfastness in the face of intimidation. The Director of Publicity, Restoration Campaign Organisation, Jonathan Obuebite, in a statement, expressed joy that the PDP was cruising to victory in the rerun. Obuebite said, “I want to appreciate the people of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area and those in the other 101 polling units, as they listened to our call that they must not allow anybody to intimidate them as they step out to exercise their civic responsibilities.” The rerun in Southern Ijaw and over 100 polling units across six LGAs in the state was not without some hiccups. There were reported shootings, ballot boxes snatching and hijack of election materials, as well as late accreditation. In Amassoma in Southern Ijaw, Ward 10, units 21 to 26, materials were not available as of 11.30am. Heavy shootings also frustrated movement of materials from Amatoru Community Secondary School to units in the ward. In Tara Kiwi community in Amassoma, the hometown of late former Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, the turnout of voters was high and accreditation was going on as of 11.50am. In Amatolo community, still in Southern Ijaw, there were sporadic shootings and the development prevented INEC from moving election materials to the area as of 12 noon. In Ward 1, Agoibiri in Southern Ijaw, there was sporadic shooting and two persons were reportedly wounded by stray bullets. The development was said to have angered some of the youths in the area, who destroyed election materials.
In the lead-up to the release of Kanye West’s 2010 album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the rapper premiered a new track every Friday for six months. (West named the series “G.O.O.D. Fridays” after his record label.) Now it seems that West is trying out the promotional stunt again. This morning his wife, Kim Kardashian West, tweeted an announcement that read: “Friiiiiday!!! New music!!!! #EveryFriday #Swish #RealFriends.”
Hours later, West premiered his brand-new single, “Real Friends,” following the debut of “Facts,” which dropped last Friday, January 1. Today’s track was temporarily taken offline after the famously meticulous artist tweeted: “Un momento, there was a slight distortion in the main loop within Real Friends.” The issue has since been resolved, and the song is currently up on his website along with a vintage photo of Yeezy.
