The 10th edition of The Future Awards Africa 2015, will hold on Sunday 6th December and the host for the big event have been announced.
South African media OAP Bonang Matheba alongside Nigerian music artist, Darey Art Alade will host the award show in Lagos.
P&G global brand Ariel has embarked upon a journey to redefine clothing care, to help keep like new for longer the fabric qualities that define the style, comfort and performance of the growing global athleisure trend in fashion.
Exploring athleisure with leading fashion designer, GILES DEACON, the athleisure trend looks set to continue into 2016 and beyond, and according to experts is on its way to establish itself as one of the fastest-growing fashion segments by 2020. In fact, to many it is more than a trend, but rather a cultural and lifestyle shift that reflects the changing attitudes, and for some, an obsession with healthier lifestyles and wellbeing.
Ariel alongside renowned designer and P&G Fabric Care Global Fashion Consultant, Giles Deacon, explored the athleisure trend and the fabrics associated with it, in a limited edition washable capsule collection, revealed exclusively at the P&G Future Fabrics event in Barcelona, 2nd December 2015.
Giles commented: “I’m inspired by women that dress with confidence, that exude self-assurance and poise in their style. Here, I wanted to create designs that take this spirit and meet it with an athletic, energetic attitude. This collection is about being unique and individual, about women feeling comfortable in themselves and their clothes, never restricted and always ready to perform at their best”
By merging style with the comfort and functionality of sports clothes, athleisure is setting new standards for ready-to-wear fashion, resulting in clothes that celebrate the best of both worlds: body-aware but not constricting, high stretch and comfort, washable and versatile, stylish and casual.
A recent global survey commissioned by P&G Fabric Care*, on behalf of Ariel, Lenor and Downy, explored the popularity of the athleisure trend, revealing that:
Nearly three out of four consumers (71%) consider active-inspired clothes as part of their “normal” everyday clothes
Over one in four (27%) say leggings are their most favoured article of clothing for day to day wear
Many wear active-inspired attire to run errands (56%), to travel (47%), to go shopping (41%) and even when going out to dinner (16%)
This new trend brings a challenge when it comes to clothing care. Today, 60% of loads contain laundry garments other than cotton. Athleisure garments include knitted fabrics, polyester, Lycra™, new wools, and many other fabrics, meaning that laundry loads are now more varied than ever. People are currently faced with 900+ wash combinations, factoring in the diversity of fibres, fabric construction, load size, soil and staining and water quality.
Understanding the relationship between the wearer and their clothes is key to the redefining clothing care. P&G Fabric Care brand Ariel has embarked on a series of studies with leading Cognitive Psychologist, Dr Lawrence Rosenblum of the University of California Riverside, to delve deeper into the phenomenon of “Enclothed Cognition”. This term describes the subconscious effects of our clothes on the way we perceive ourselves, the way we think, our moods and behaviour.
Existing research shows that people perform better when they are wearing clothes that are associated with the important aspects of the task they are performing. In addition, early experiments suggest that cognitive performance is improved when wearing clean clothing. A massive 70% of people claim wearing fresh, active-inspired clothing can make them feel more energetic, and 62% say it increases confidence*, demonstrating the true importance of caring for clothes properly.
Dr Lawrence Rosenblum, Cognitive Psychologist, University of California Riverside comments: “There are definitely cognitive consequences of wearing formal clothes versus casual clothes. Our clothing changes the way we perceive ourselves, but it also changes the way the brain works, how it forms concepts, and the kind of decisions we make as a result. Our clothes affect us on an entirely different level that exists without other people telling us how we look and feel.”
Comfort, style and performance, have become the ubiquitous qualities associated with athleisure, and retaining a “like new” quality is at the forefront of research and development of all Ariel and Downy/Lenor clothing care products.
Ariel formulas provide advanced cleaning that delivers unbeatable clothing care for the latest natural and synthetic fibre mixes in athleisure wear, via a process of Ariel Fibre Purification and Ariel Fibre Preservation. This advanced Deep Clean Complex allows for washing at lower temperatures, helping to protect the colours and the fibres of fabrics, especially a fibre like elastane which is extremely common in athleisure and can be prone to damage.
Thanks to its proprietary blend of advanced cleaning technologies, Ariel removes seen and unseen impurities embedded deep within fabrics while also preventing them from re-depositing back on fibres to stop their build-up, as they can cause damage and premature aging of clothes (a process P&G clothing care experts call “grey veil”).
Ariel also helps protect the feel of comfort of athleisure clothes through FibreSCIENCE technologies specialized in optimising the wash conditions to help protect fibre integrity and preserve that “like-new” feel.
Union Bank rolls out a massive re-branding campaign with stylist Ezinne Chinkata from Zinkata.
Talking on her experience Ezinne explained on her blog how excited and honoured she was to receive the phone call from Union Bank.
“The essence of the re-branding project was; “UBN is currently in the process of implementing a campaign that requires a photo shoot with styling and costumes. The theme for the shoot is Fashion Evolution, which would involve depicting fashion trends from past to present – how the old has become new”
“The scenarios was – a family portrait of a mother and four daughters wearing Nigerian clothes from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and millennium.”
“An evolution of the Iro and Buba attire – from the way it was worn in the past to the way it is worn now.”
“It was quite a time-sensitive project, so I had to work quickly, decisively as well as team up with a designer that would deliver with minimum supervision. Juliet Omoruyi (House of Julyet Peters) was perfect! Juliet is super passionate about her craft and is always happy to try out new projects. I was so lucky! For the group shoot; to depict fashion from the 60’s,70’s,80’s 90’s and now. I and Juliet created designs using Vlisco Fabric to represent styles from the different eras.”
“Union bank also had a colour palette/background they wanted to incorporate into the AD. Armed with this knowledge, I set off to the Vlisco store and selected fabrics that worked with their brand colours and also “should” fuse nicely as a group portrait.”
I would start with the 70’s era’s image ..It’s one of the key looks Union Bank selected to work with for most of the campaign and the roll-out banner. We opted for bell-bottom pants, a fitted shirt and a big afro! A classic look associated with the seventies.. Hakeem Salaam was the photographer for this project and took amazing photos: The images below are un-treated and mostly behind the scenes….”
The collection was inspired by DJ Cuppys love for cupcakes and each snapback in the collection is named after one of Cuppy’s favourite cupcake flavours which are Cotton Candy, Strawberries & Crème, and Caramel to name a few. The hats also come in a cupcake packaged box as well as a 24 X Cuppy key chains rings to go with it.
For its glitzy Roman Métiers d’Art show, Chanel filled the Cinecittà studios in Rome with an international assortment of celebrities. American beauties Kristen Stewart and Rooney Mara were there, as were Italian starlets Margareth Madè and Anita Caprioli. The standout attendee in the front row, though, may have been Chinese actress Zhou Xun. Arriving in a flurry of white ruffled lace straight off the brand’s couture runway, Xun quickly captured the attention of photographers as she stopped to pose for a selfie on the opulent Roman sculpture–strewn set.
While she isn’t a household name in the States yet, Xun has been a fixture on the film and music scenes in her native China since the mid-’90s. As one of China’s most visible stars, and the only actress to have won all three of the country’s top acting awards, she is more than your average ingenue. Appearing onscreen since her teens, she first garnered international attention with her critically acclaimed role in Suzhou River, an artsy romance where she plays dual male and female roles. Since then, she’s gone on to break box office records with her movies, becoming the most commercially successful Chinese actress of all time. Favoring idiosyncratic characters with complex backstories, she’s built a varied and compelling résumé, playing the kinds of offbeat characters audiences love.
Clearly Xun is as selective with her wardrobe as she is with her film choices: Her personal style relies on elegant pieces from Balenciaga, Lanvin, and, of course, Chanel (she was handpicked by Karl Lagerfeld to be a brand ambassadress back in 2011). She is consistently glamorous, the kind of woman to top off casual jeans and sneakers with a bouclé jacket. Xun has taken more fashion risks since she chopped of her hair though, even swapping out her soignée couture for more risqué Balmaindresses. And given her recent turn in the fashion spotlight, who knows what new and transformative looks she’ll try next.

A High Court sitting in Makurdi, the Benue State capital and presided over by Justice Adam Onum has ordered the authorities of the Nigeria Air Force (NAF), Makurdi to jointly or severally pay N20million to members of Akpen community for breaching the members’ fundamental rights to dignity of human persons.
Members of the community (Applicants) led by Clement Chia and seven others had in a suit filed by their counsel, Adi Demeer Esq, alleged that authorities of the Air Force (respondents) located adjacent to them in Makurdi forcefully ejected them, manhandled some of them and marked 150 structures for demolition.
They therefore demanded that the court restrain the Air Force authorities and make them to pay N5 billion for the violation of their human rights.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Onum stated that even as the respondents have the right to embark on any legitimate process or processes to claim right over the land the Akpen community is sited, they (respondents) are perpetually restrained from further embarking on acts of self-help against any member of the applicants’ community on account of any claim that the land on which such a member is sitting belongs to the Nigeria Air Force or any of the respondents.
I must stress that the government is entitled to pursue its debtors and recover from them all amounts legitimately due to it. The courts of law are established both for the people and the government authority. The government should not shy away from making use and taking advantage of the courts of law. It is a misconception to think that the measured speed with which the processes of court travel is too slow to the military.
Since the government has taken the civilized stand of observing the human rights provision of the 1999 Constitution and the rule of law, it cannot allow its image to be tarnished, stained and mutilated by abandoning the rule of law and resorting to the rule of force, which in the peculiar circumstances, is very barren. The rule of force wearing the kid glove of an edict can never usher in social justice. It only wears in the condemned face of law,” Justice Onum stressed.
He stated that even as the respondents’ counsel may seem to be attractive under the guise of national security, it cannot be acceptable to justify the ejection of the applicants from their habitations in brazen acts of self help.
The Governor Benedict Ayade of Cross River State, a former senator, a professor of environmental studies was in Lagos for an interactive session with relevant stakeholders involved in the forthcoming Calabar Festival. On the sidelines of the meeting the governor had an interactive session with newsmen during which he opened up on his style and strategic approach to governance. Excerpts:
By Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor
On how he is approaching the tough economic challenges
Well the economy is slowing down and so government is supposed to downsize, reduce the number of ministries, cut down allowances and salaries, but that is really not the right way to go. Economics teaches us that it is as such times that governments that are socially sensitive are supposed to expand. At this period of cash crunch is when I have increased the number of ministries from 18 to 28.
So, I am now increasing the number of commissioners, this is because as more young people get unemployed, as the cash crunch bites harder, what happens is that when people have no alternative to survival, then the survivalist instinct which pushes them to criminality begins to manifest and then you have social tension and so, you spend more on security which distracts from spending on productive assets and so you are just going round the clock.
In America today, when things get really tough like that, government puts more money on people’s pay checks, increases their pay checks for them to increase consumption. At this time of cash crunch is when people are supposed to consume more. So for our own government we will expand within the limits of what is financially possible to expand government to increase consumption and that is why Cross River State is going to have a very high number of appointees at the political level. They don’t add up to the risk and cost of leaving them unemployed. If you know what it takes for you to be a commissioner and then after four years you leave office for nothing.
So, we must understand that at the point of financial crunch government needs to expand until the economy begins to boil as it used to boil, then government shrinks and private sector takes over and that is the concept that we have applied in Cross River State.
Today, we are known to be a state which is first in the payment of salaries. We have never paid since I assumed office below the 25th of any month.
Yes in the face of cash crunch we are going to manage what we have more diligently. Cut luxuries that are available to the governor, focus emphatically on what is required to keep government running and expand the horizon of opportunities for young people.
Honesty in Office
Honesty in office for me is the greatest test of morality and in moral conscience you will always use Immanuel Kant, who is a German philosopher and professor of theology on the argument of morality, integrity and character on public acceptability and values. I believe that the greatest asset I brought before the people of Cross River State is my history, honesty, character and pedigree. It is known, it is visible and you can feel it.
Is Cross River State not too poor for the ambitious projects?
The state knows what I inherited. In spite of the challenges of the state, the state is rich and great. If I don’t have ideas, then I can say that Cross River is poor.
How can Cross River State be poor with 152 kilometres of Atlantic Coast? How can Cross River State be poor with huge deposits of gold, bauxite, tantalite, tin, silica, kaolin and on and on? How can Cross River State be poor when you have the most civilised souls, a people that are very dependable, people who are not aggressive and materially crazy?
How can you have such rich heritage, people of such distinctive character and honour and you say the state is poor? To me I believe that I inherited a very rich state.
What challenges do you have as a governor?
It is to make the press understand that it is dreams that bring reality, but the dreams have to die, rot and then germinate into reality. Everything looks impossible until you put your soul into the challenges.
For me it is to make the press drum up more support for this project that looks otherwise impossible. Little did I know that what I conceived as a dream would have the endorsement of the president, a president who is focused, a president who is known for his words.
So for him to have given his words that ‘I shall be here to commission the project’ is indicative of his commitment.
Political challenge
This same project has become so popular that today we have at least $10 billion funding being put aside by a country to invest in the port. Today, we have letters coming from Chad and Niger requesting for land for boarded warehouse and industrial parks.
The super highway was beset with a political challenge, the issue of whether it was going to pass through the National Park. The original design of the Super Highway had no provision at any time to criss-cross the National Park, but unfortunately there are some who believe that the success of this project would automatically provide a second term for the sitting governor. So, if you have an ambition to be governor the thing to do is to frustrate the project.
Because the design was clear over 3 kilometres away from the National Park and that is why the president was so angry when he suspended his first visit.
We have a firm president who knows the right thing and insisted that the right thing should be done
