FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PUSHES FOR ELECTRICITY TARRIF INCREASE
MINISTER of Power, Works and Housing Mr. Babatunde Fashola, said Nigerians should expect increase in electricity tariff in no distant time. This is as he also indicated the Ministry of Petroleum has signified their interest to build certain critical pipelines to transport gas to the power plants that will add another 2,000 mega watts to the national grid within 12-15 months.
According to him, “By far the most complex challenge is the problem of tariff. It is complex because it is more in the hands of citizens than in the hands of Government.
“The role of Government is to set the tariff and in doing so, Government has committed to what is called a Multi-Year Tariff Order. This was done in order to attract investors to the market; otherwise we will not have achieved the privatization if the price of the product is not attractive to the investors.
“The tariff is the price of producing power. It covers cost of generation, gas purchase, transportation, transformers, staff costs and so on, disaggregated and charged per kilowatt/hour to make the business of power profitable.
“What Government did was to spread it over a number of years so that the impact is not felt at once but over a periodic incremental process. I know that it has been a contentious matter, but I make this fervent appeal to consumers to give us the benefit of doubt, to forbear and accept it.
As regards transmission network, the Minister noted that the amount of power that is available today is slightly larger than the capacity which the transmission network can support. He said, “We have identified a total of 142 (One Hundred and forty-two) projects of which 45 are at 50 percent level of completion and about 22 (twenty-two) can be completed within a year.
“The budget estimates are known and we intend to aggressively pursue completion to increase the carrying capacity from the generating companies, GENCOs to the distribution companies, DISCOs.

CALABAR CARNIVAL 2015: GOVERNOR AYADE ADOPTS QUEEN
The governor, at a glamorous unveiling of the 2015 edition of Carnival Calabar theme tagged ‘Climate Change’, which took place last Sunday, at Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, surprisingly announced enlisting beauty queens as members of a new band called the Governor’s Band. “Irrespective of their states of origin, they represent the beauty, elegance, style and class of the average Cross River youth,” said the governor.
According to Ayade, the beauty queens also represent the signature band, they have been looking forward to seeing since the inception of the carnival. While inviting all the beauty queens on stage, the governor declared, “ I will add value to their beauty and help them to realize their full potentials,” He revealed plans to commission the first of its kind runway in Nigeria.
The event had dignitaries from the Corporate Nigeria, the United States Embassy in Nigeria, actors, actresses and music stars in attendance.
Marketing what has come to be known as the tourism destination in Nigeria, Ayade revealed that Carnival bands from 14 countries will be performing this year, while the notable children Carnival has also been repackaged to take the form of family funfair.
Speaking further, Ayade said, the carnival can only get better with additional activities and restyling of the old ones, revealing that Bikers Day and Disco fiesta are part of the new offerings this year. He also announced plans to set up ‘the biggest garment factory’ in Nigeria on December 15, adding that the establishment of the factory would reduce the money being spent by the state government to import various costumes for the festival and also, create employment opportunities for many citizens.
The governor assured of security, praising the State as having the lowest crime rate in Nigeria. “Our people are emotional stable and content with what they have. However, s full team of security will be mobilized for the festival,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, Sen. Florence Ita-Giwa, Chairman, Calabar Carnival Bands Association and leader of the Seagull Band, commended the efforts of the past governors of the state for sustaining the carnival.
She said, like other concerned citizens, she was initially worried about the disposition of the new government in the State to the festival, but that the governor has allayed all fears. The Calabar Carnival started from the era of former Gov. Donald Duke.
When Donald was leaving, we thought that would be the end of the Carnival,” she said, adding “But when Imoke came in, he took the carnival a notch higher. With time, the carnival also became capital intensive, but despite the challenges, Imoke managed to keep it going. When Professor Ayade came, the same fear was entertained, but with what you are all witnesses to this evening, it is obvious the Carnival can only get better.”
Mr Gab Onah, the Chairman of the Cross River State Carnival Commission revealed that this year’s carnival would attract more than 50,000 participants.
Guests at the unveiling include comic actor John Okafor, aka Mr. Ibu, sonorous singer, Waje, CEO of EbonyLife TV, Mo Abudu, Dance Hall singer, Patoranking, reggae artiste Blackie, Olu Maintain, Kcee and actors Enyinna Nwigwe and Elvis Chuks. The theme of the 2015 Calabar Carnival was unveiled opening day of the biggest travel exhibition in West Africa, Akwaaba African Travel Market.
JUSTINE BIEBER ON AN ALL AMERICAN CLASSIC OUTFIT
During the colder months, it can be tempting to take refuge in an all-black uniform, especially when it comes to menswear. Spotted out in Los Angeles earlier this week, Justin Bieber showed that a winter wardrobe needn’t be drab.
Dressed in a light blue denim jacket, the singer’s look had a classic, all-American vibe. He offset the stonewash tones with a light coral top, while his black jeans and Yeezy 350s provided a dark counterpoint. The camouflage cap added a printed touch, and mirrored shades made for a superstar finish.
KENDALL JENNER'S SUNDAY MORNING HAIR STYE TRICK
Whether you’ve relied on dry shampoo for one too many days or just can’t see the chic in fuzzy flyaways today, consider a generous dose of hair oil the natural enemy of a classic bad hair day—especially when your Sunday calls for a split-second style so you can get to the business of holiday shopping.
Case in point: Kendall Jenner, who was spotted leaving Barneys in Beverly Hills with her dark layers smoothed back into a gleaming knot that telegraphed the same cool minimalism as her black outfit and pristine white kicks. It’s the cold-weather-friendly answer to summer’s shower-fresh styles—with the added benefit of a stealth deep conditioning that all but guarantees a better hair situation come Monday morning.
REPS KICK AGAINST IMUNITY FOR SENATE PRESIDENT SPEAKER CJN
A human right activist and member of the House of Representatives, Rep Philip Shaibu has said that the House will reject any proposal to grant immunity to the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Chief Judge of the Federation, CJN.
He also said that the green chamber would not entertain any bill or motion that is anti-people.
His opposition to immunity for the headships of the National Assembly and the CJN came few months after the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Leo Ogor had said the National Assembly may consider immunity for the afore mentioned in the Constitutional review.
Rep Ogor had contended that most of the distractions the legislature always faced was due to external influences, adding that giving immunity to the heads of the legislature and judiciary as being enjoyed by the executive arm would reduce external distractions in the National Assembly.
