AMBER ROSE WRITES ABOUT HOW TO STOP CARING WHAT PEOPLE THINK ON TIMES MAGAZINE

Following Kanye West’s tweets where he called ex-girlfriend Amber Rose a stripper, the model and mum of one has written an op-ed piece for Time Magazine talking about how she learned to stop caring what people think of her.

Read her article below.

Ever since high school, I’ve been called a slut. All the boys were attracted to me—that wasn’t my fault! Then, when I started getting famous, the shaming got even worse. All these messed up stories came out about me, and I was like, “That’s not true! I’m not that kind of girl!” But even things I had done—things a man would never be judged for—got me lots of hate.

After my ex-husband Wiz Khalifa and I got a divorce, I’d go out for a date at a restaurant like any normal single human and people would say, “Man, she’s such a ho. She’s out at restaurants with guys.” Then they would see my ex-husband with a bunch of women. They would say, “He’s the man! That’s so cool.” So when I went on a date, I’m a whore, and when he’s piling girls in a car, he’s the man? There’s something wrong here.

It wasn’t just men saying these types of things. There were a lot of women saying hateful things to me. I was getting torn down constantly. But in the past year, I’ve just started not caring.

People would actually say things like, “Who would ever love you? You were a stripper. Why are you in relationships?” And I used to feel like I had to explain that maybe it was because I’m a good person.

But I realized that I can’t make everyone believe. And I can’t talk to everyone and tell them who I really am. They’re still going to have their own opinions. If you know me, you love me. If you don’t know me, you might love me, but you might not—and that’s cool. And you know what? Now I sleep like a baby at night.

It wasn’t even that hard to stop caring what other people thought. I wasn’t married, and I didn’t have a boyfriend so I didn’t have to care about anyone else’s feelings or protect anyone’s heart. I thought, “This is my life. This is about me. If you don’t like it, I don’t care. I’m going to do anything and everything I want with my own life.”

What I’ve realized is that, when you care too much, you’re not living at your full potential. When you really stop caring about what people say, that’s when you really start living. It’s such an amazing feeling. It’s about loving who you are, owning who you are and knowing that it’s O.K. to live your life how you want to live it. We’re all human, which means we’re not all perfect. It’s so cool to think that I might help women think about who they want to be and then encourage them to be that person with no remorse. I want to help women just be happy in their own skin.

So please: Before you judge someone—especially another woman—put yourself in her shoes and also look at your past. That’s what a lot of women fail to do. They’re so quick to call another girl names, but it’s like: You know what? There may have been a time where you looked back and said, “I probably shouldn’t have done that.” Does that make you a ho? No, it makes you a human.

CELINE DION LAYS HER HUSBAND TO REST

Celine Dion laid her late husband Rene Angelil to rest yesterday, Friday 22nd of January at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, Canada.

She attended the funeral with her three children – Rene-Charles, 14, and five-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy – and they stood in front of the casket outside of the church for several minutes until the bells rung and it was placed in the hearse.

14-year-old Rene Charles gave an emotional eulogy at the ceremony. He said “Fifteen years is not a long time for a son to get to know his father. You had a busy life, but we were communicating through golf, hockey, poker, and smoked meat. And a lot of other wonderful food. Bonding more and more as time went by. You left me now with enough good memories of you to share with my younger brothers. As they grow older without you being around, I’ll make sure to pass on what I’ve learned from you. You are a tough act to follow, but with your help everything is going to be fine. Dad, I promise you here that we are all going to live up to your standards.”

RHE ACADEMY PLEDGES TO BECOME MORE DIVERSE: BUT IS THAT ENOUGH

This afternoon, after facing intense criticism for its failure to nominate a single minority actorfor an Oscar for the second year in a row, the Academy announced a new plan to dramatically increase diversity within its membership. In its statement, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences pledged to “commit to doubling the number of women and diverse members of the Academy by 2020.” As of 2012, Academy members were 94 percent white, so even with the pledge, the diversity members will make up a whopping 12 percent.

As the awards ceremony date draws closer, more and more actors are weighing in on the controversy. Yesterday, Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon shared a Timemagazine article on the absence of minority nominations on her Facebook page. “So disappointed that some of 2015’s best films, filmmakers, and performances were not recognized,” she wrote. “I would love to see a more diverse voting of its membership.”

While the Academy is planning to expand the race and gender makeup of their membership, the truth is, fixing the voting component of the Oscars is only a small step toward fixing the diversity problem in Hollywood. Viola Davis, who gave an impassioned speech during the 2015 Emmys on the lack of opportunities for black actors, shared her opinion on the matter in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “You can change the Academy, but if there are no black films being produced, what is there to vote for?” she said. “It’s a symptom of a much greater disease.” Davis’s sentiments echo what director Spike Lee wrote at the onset of the Oscars boycott. “As I see it, the Academy Awards is not where the ‘real’ battle is,” he wrote. “It’s in the executive office of the Hollywood studios and TV and cable networks. This is where the gate keepers decide what gets made and what gets jettisoned to ‘turnaround’ or scrap heap.”

SCLC IN ATLANTA HONOURS PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN IN RECOGNITION OF HIS GOOD LEADERSHIP

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was today (January 14th) honored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. He was awarded with the Presidential Award in recognition of his leadership in advancing human rights, social justice and the fight for universal freedom.

The SCLC, founded by the late American Civil Right leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, in January 1957 is currently led by Dr. Charles Steele Jr. The event is part of the activities leading up to the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day on Monday, January 18th, 2016.

Former President Jonathan is the first African leader to be so honored. Dr. Jonathan also received Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's sister, Naomi King during the event. Before his remarks at the event, Dr. Jonathan met privately with the president of the SCLC.

The president of the SCLC, Dr. Charles Steele Jr proposed to work with the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation to advance the cause of peace around the world and to bridge the gap between people of color in the Diaspora and Africa. Former President Jonathan responded that his vision is to help stabilize and promote democracy and peace in Africa.

He went on to say that without peace you can not have economic progress. He revealed that this was the reason he pushed for Nigeria's intervention to ensure peace in various African nations such as Côte d'Ivoire while he was in office. Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and President Steele then agreed to collaborate along the lines suggested by the former Nigerian President.

At the event, former President Jonathan expressed his gratitude to the SCLC for inviting him and declared that it was "virtually impossible to separate this worthy body from its founder, the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, or from epoch making landmark events of the American Civil Rights movement".

He also said "My personal takeaway from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, is service to God and the brotherhood and equality of all men before their Creator. In keeping with that, I have learnt not to look up to any man, except he is taller than I, or to look down on a fellow mortal, except I am admiring his shoes".

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is the Chairman of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation and is in Atlanta, Georgia, on the invitation of a number of US institutions. Below are his full remarks at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

THE ART OF COLOUR: AMEDE RESORT 2016 BATIK AND TYE DYE

Eponymous Nigerian Fashion brand ÁMEDE notably known for the use of batik & tye dye for her collections unveils its resort 16 collection themed ‘The ART of COLOUR’. In this collection, the designer converts her fabrics into a canvas to explore colours & art just like an artist will do with paintings.

Taking inspiration from 1950’s renaissance paintings and artwork of famous painters, the designer delves into how colour and art are juxtaposed and how they ultimately affect mood, style, beauty & fashion. The collection is also a merger between an artistic ideology with timeless designs yet still appealing to current trends.

The designer believes that this collection will appeal to women who appreciate art and understand how art affects and influences our choices in fashion.
